Why Does It Feel Like There's a New Food Recall Every Week?
If you've felt like food recalls have become the next headline every time you open your phone, you're not imagining the visibility of them.

Lettuce. Frozen fruit. Prepared foods. Milk. Packaged meals.
And after enough headlines, it's easy to start wondering:
What am I even supposed to eat anymore?
As a dietitian, I don't think the answer is to become afraid of your grocery store—or to start avoiding entire categories of food.
But I do think it's worth understanding why recalls happen, how our food system makes contamination difficult to prevent, and why strong public health surveillance matters.
Most importantly, you should know what you can actually do to reduce your risk
without turning food safety into another source of food fear.
First: a food recall doesn't mean our food supply is “unsafe”
A recall means a company or regulatory agency has identified a product that may pose a health risk and is taking steps to remove it from the marketplace.
Sometimes the reason is microbial contamination, such as Salmonella, E. coli, Listeria, or Cyclospora.
Other recalls happen because of undeclared allergens, foreign materials, labeling errors, or other safety concerns.
FDA maintains an ongoing database of food recalls and safety alerts, while USDA-FSIS handles recalls involving meat, poultry and certain egg products.
In other words:
A recall is not necessarily evidence that the entire food category is dangerous.
In many cases, it's evidence that a problem was identified and action was taken.
And that's an important distinction.
So why does it feel like there are so many recalls?
There isn't one simple explanation.
Our food system is enormous and interconnected.
Food can move through farms, processors, distributors, restaurants and grocery stores before it reaches your plate. One contaminated ingredient can therefore affect many different products and brands.
A recent example is the Cyclospora outbreak associated with iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico.
Taylor Fresh Farms de Mexico voluntarily recalled affected iceberg lettuce in July 2026 after the lettuce was identified as a potential source of Cyclospora contamination. The affected lettuce entered food-service and retail channels across multiple states.
This is where food recalls can become confusing for consumers.
You may not recognize the name of the company that originally supplied an ingredient.
The same underlying ingredient can enter different supply chains, be processed into different foods, or appear in different products.
That doesn't mean every product from that company—or every product that contains lettuce—is contaminated.
It means our food system is interconnected enough that tracing the source can become complicated.
And that's exactly why traceability matters.
The supply chain problem: one ingredient can go a long way
Imagine a contaminated ingredient entering a large processing facility.
That ingredient might end up in:
Brand A's salad
Brand B's prepared meal
Brand C's restaurant product
Brand D's grocery-store private label
Consumers see four different products.
Behind the scenes, they may have originated from the same supplier.
That's one reason a single contamination event can produce what looks like a huge number of unrelated recalls.
This isn't necessarily evidence that one particular brand or food category is uniquely unsafe.
It's a reflection of how centralized and interconnected modern food production has become.
And this is where public health surveillance matters
One of the least visible parts of food safety happens before you ever see a recall headline.
Public health agencies monitor illnesses, investigate clusters, test samples, trace food through supply chains, and work with laboratories and food producers to identify potential sources.
The CDC's Foodborne Diseases Active Surveillance Network, or FoodNet, has historically tracked infections caused by pathogens including Campylobacter, Cyclospora, Listeria, Salmonella, Shigella, Vibrio, Yersinia and Shiga toxin-producing E. coli in a surveillance area representing about 16% of the U.S. population.
But there have been important changes.
Beginning July 1, 2025, FoodNet reporting became optional for all of these pathogens except Salmonella and Shiga toxin-producing E. coli. CDC says this does not mean it stopped tracking foodborne illness; other surveillance systems, including PulseNet, continue to support outbreak detection and investigation.
That distinction matters.
It would be inaccurate to say:
“The CDC stopped tracking foodborne illness.”
It didn't.
But it is fair to ask what we lose when active surveillance becomes less comprehensive for certain pathogens.
Because strong surveillance helps us identify patterns of illness, detect outbreaks, and connect illnesses back to potential food sources.
Food safety depends on the infrastructure behind the scenes.
Traceability matters, too
Another important piece is how quickly investigators can figure out where a contaminated food came from and where it went.
FDA's Food Traceability Rule was designed to require additional supply-chain records for certain foods so that key information can be provided to FDA quickly during an investigation.
The original compliance date was January 20, 2026.
FDA proposed extending it by 30 months, and federal legislation subsequently directed FDA not to enforce the rule before July 20, 2028.
This doesn't mean food suddenly became unsafe because the rule was delayed.
But it does illustrate an important point:
Food safety depends on infrastructure.
The faster you can trace a food from its source through the supply chain, the faster investigators can identify potentially affected products and remove them from the marketplace.
What can YOU do?
You can't control the entire food supply—but you can reduce your risk.
And this is where I want to bring the conversation back to something practical.
1. Stay informed
When you hear about a recall, check an official FDA or USDA recall notice.
Don't rely solely on a social media post saying:
“EVERYONE STOP EATING LETTUCE.”
Look at the actual recall and check whether your specific product is affected.
Depending on the product, that can mean checking the:
Brand
Product name
UPC
Lot or batch number
Best-by/use-by date
Distribution area
If your product matches the recall, follow the official instructions.
2. Handle produce safely
For everyday food safety, rinse fresh produce under running water before eating or preparing it.
Washing can reduce surface contamination, dirt and some bacteria from produce.
But here's an important distinction:
Washing does not eliminate all pathogens.
And if a specific product has been recalled, do not try to “wash the recall away.”
A recalled food should be discarded or returned according to the recall instructions.
Washing produce is an everyday food-safety practice—not a way to rescue recalled food.
3. Cook foods properly
Cooking foods to appropriate internal temperatures is one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of foodborne illness from pathogens that can be killed by heat.
Use a food thermometer rather than relying solely on color or appearance.
This is particularly important for foods such as:
Meat
Poultry
Eggs
Ground meats
Other foods where undercooking can increase foodborne illness risk
And remember that proper cooking doesn't replace other food-safety practices like preventing cross-contamination and keeping perishable foods at safe temperatures.
4. Consider your food sources—but don't assume “local” automatically means safe
Buying locally can have benefits, including knowing more about where your food comes from and potentially shortening parts of the supply chain.
But local does not automatically mean safer.
Food safety practices still matter whether your food comes from:
A farmers market
A local farm
A restaurant
Your own backyard
The goal isn't to find a food source with zero risk.
It's to reduce risk wherever you can.
Food safety isn't about finding a “perfectly safe” food
This is the part I really want you to remember.
There is no need to respond to every recall by eliminating an entire food category.
A lettuce recall doesn't mean:
“Never eat lettuce again.”
A frozen fruit recall doesn't mean:
“Frozen fruit is dangerous.”
A Salmonella recall involving one product doesn't mean:
“Avoid everything containing that ingredient forever.”
Instead, ask:
What was actually recalled?
Am I affected?
What does the official guidance say?
What should I do?
That's a much more useful response than letting a scary headline dictate your entire grocery list.

Pause.
Check the source.
Look at the actual recall.
Follow the guidance.
You don't need to avoid every food that makes the news.
You just need good information and a little perspective.
Food safety isn't about eliminating every possible risk.
It's about reducing risk while still being able to enjoy and nourish yourself with food.
And as your dietitian, that's what I want for you:
To feel informed—not afraid of your food.
